Duquesne Light Company is now offering The Electrical Distribution Technology (EDT) program. It provides training in the basic skills, knowledge, and abilities applicants would need to apply for skilled craft positions in the electric utility industry. The program design, including pre-qualification testing and course content, is intended to not only produce candidates who possess the skills to safely and confidently perform the manual tasks associated with electrical utility work, but also build the foundational skills that will allow them to advance further in their careers.

The EDT program consists of a 1 year 44 credit course. Students will be responsible for paying their own tuition for the classes at CCAC, however there will be 2 paid internships at the end of each semester as part of the program. Upon graduation, students who excelled during the program and demonstrated the right skills and attitudes will be considered for employment with Duquesne Light through its standard hiring practices. This year-long program runs from April 2019 through July 2020.

PCRG's Community Development Summit has become the place where ideas are shared, lessons are learned, and partnerships are formed in the name of creating accessible, thriving communities for all. We hope that you consider submitting a session. We seek outstanding sessions on all topics relating to community development. This year, we are putting a particular focus on access to capital and building capacity within communities.

Past sessions have covered everything from land banking to workforce investment, from education to arts in the community. Presenters can include anyone from individuals who work in business, nonprofits, and government to activists and residents - from ages 8 to 80! Sessions should generally discuss how people and systems interact with land, capital, and/or access and mobility.

Even if you don’t have a fully developed session, feel free to submit whatever ideas you have. We encourage you to think outside the box! Interested in learning more? .

Celebrity Charity Basketball Game

January 12, 2019

The game was filled with local celebrities, food, and fun for the whole family and was a huge success helping to raise over $14,000 dollars that will go to fun scholarships funded by both the university and the chamber.

Despite the threat of snow outside, nearly 300 fans packed the Wunderly Gymnasium to watch the festivities and have some fun. PMAHCC treasurer Jesus Torres, who helped organize the event, was very happy with the turn out saying that the event was a huge success.

“What an amazing experience,” said Torres via Facebook. “I don’t know where to begin but thank you to the fans, our sponsors, the players, coaches, and many more. Thanks to them we raised close to $14,000 dollars and both [Penn State Greater Allegheny] and [Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce] are thankful for their support.”

Donning the court inside the Wunderly Gymnasium included names like Pittsburgh Pirates 1979 World Series Champion Omar Moreno, Pittsburgh Bullets CEO Marcus Robinson, District Attorney Zappala, Pirates president Frank Coonley and third base coach Joey Cora, and members of the Steel City Yellow Jackets to name a few.

During the game the PMAHCC honored Rosana Guernica with a humanitarian achievement award for her work helping Puerto Rico after hurricane Maria. Between October and December of 2017, Guernica complete five relief trips delivering over 76,500 pounds of supplies to the island while evacuating nearly 300 people.

A Special Thanks to the City Theatre for sponsoring our Latinx Leaders Gathering on January 18th.

Representatives from Pittsburgh Latinx-related nonprofits gathered to discuss to discuss our the Hispanic populations, organizations and how we can best work together to benefit our people and the city as a whole. It is our firm belief that there is strength in numbers and that we can find growing prosperity through partnership.

Why did you choose this career path?

I’ve always been interested in technology and saw a growing market in the field of Cybersecurity.  I changed my major accordingly when they announced that they would be opening the new degree.

What is your dream job?

The job that I would like to work towards is Penetration Tester.

What sets you apart from other recent graduates (a skill or experience)?

I think that my linguistic skills in German and Spanish set me apart along with a deep understanding of new currency technologies and how they work in conjunction with cybersecurity. 

Tell us about a cultural experience you have had.

I spent a year studying abroad in Germany.  The difference in thought, education, transportation, and other aspects of the local culture opened my view to how important a cultural and traditional base is to holding together communities.

What is your Hispanic background?

My mother participated in a foreign exchange program between Pitt and her university in Colombia. Thereafter she decided to stay and put down roots in the US.  Aspects of Hispanic culture have influenced every part of my life from childhood to present.

How did you get involved with the Chamber?

I was asked to volunteer as a student for an annual chamber event and have stuck with the organization ever since.  

What motivates you?

I find the most motivation to work when the outcome produced will help someone.

Where do you see yourself in five years / ten years?

In five to ten years I see myself with a well-established career base and either completing a master’s degree or an equivalent certification in penetration testing.

What is your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement is my long and continued voluntarism through multiple organizations.

What do you like about volunteering for PMAHCC?

Volunteering for PMAHCC provides me the opportunity to meet new people, experience more Latino culture, build connections, and practice my Spanish.  The wide variety of events offered by the chamber also makes volunteering a little less repetitive.

What do you like to do if your downtime?

In my downtime I like to play instruments, work on random small coding projects, and do some amateur market analysis.

Tell us one interesting thing about you:

I’ve been to Guatemala annually for the past 10 years to translate for a missionary group.   

Prime Stage Theatre's March production of In the Time of the Butterflies features cast of Pittsburgh-based Latinx actors and director

PITTSBURGH, PA, January 23, 2019 — On both days of a recent winter weekend, director Ricardo Vila-Roger sat behind a desk in Prime Stage Theatre’s West End studio reviewing headshots and resumes and watching intently as dozens of professional Pittsburgh actors auditioned from script sides that featured dialogue in both English and Spanish. There was no language barrier, though. Like Vila-Roger, all the actors were Latinx in one form or other.

Auditions were being held for roles in Prime Stage’s March 2019 Pittsburgh premiere of In the Time of the Butterflies, a stage production based on Julia Alvarez’ historical novel about dictator Rafael Trujillo’s bloody reign in the Dominican Republic from the 1930s to the 1960s and the four Mirabal sisters, code named the “Butterflies," who sparked a revolution to overthrow his regime. Three of the sisters were assassinated in 1960.

To say that the "Butterflies” are deeply meaningful to people of Latinx heritage might be an understatement. Today they are considered national heroes in the Dominican Republic for the courage they demonstrated in taking on a corrupt government. The United Nations General Assembly was so moved by their experiences that in 1993 it designates each November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

So when Producing Artistic Director  Wayne Brinda made the decision in 2016 to schedule In the Time of the Butterflies as part of Prime Stage’s current Season of Courage, there was only one caveat: that the director and cast (with the exception of one American character) must include and feature Latinx professionals.

“On one hand,” said Brinda, “because the play features dialogue in both English and Spanish, authenticity could only be achieved if the cast members have strong familiarity with the language and the culture.  To be compelling, entertaining, and engaging, it has to be accurate!”

Producing this story enables Prime Stage to present a range of programs with local partners through the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read program which honor and raise awareness of the local Latinx community. “Prime Stage has always strongly promoted diversity in all its forms, and knowing that there are so many truly accomplished and talented Latinx performers and artists in Pittsburgh inspired me to green-light this production,” he said.  

"We are also honored that  Minou Mirabal, the daughter of Minerva, one of "the Butterflies" endorses the program.  She will meet with students, present the NEA keynote address, and meet with audiences during the opening weekend of the production. In this way, Prime Stage continues to truly bring literature, culture, and history to life in unique ways."

Vila-Roger, a University of Pittsburgh artist-in-residence of Caribbean descent who acts in addition to directing, is proud to be helming this production. “There aren’t a lot of plays produced in Pittsburgh that give Latinx folks the opportunity to explore and play our heritage,” he said. “I’m proud to be associated with this production and, I can tell you that there’s already a buzz about it in the local Latinx community.”

Veteran Latinx-Pittsburgh actor Enrique Bazan, who landed the coveted role of dictator Rafael Trujillo in the production, is looking forward to playing the real-life villain. “All actors want to play the bad guy,” he said. “And playing an actual person who made life so difficult for so many Dominican people gives me the opportunity to create more awareness about how he impacted our culture.”

Prime Stage’s production of In the Time of the Butterflies, along with nearly 20 book and play discussion programs that are scheduled across the Pittsburgh region in early 2019, are part of an initiative funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts’ (NEA) Big Read in collaboration with Arts Midwest, which has selected Prime Stage as the only Pennsylvania organization to participate in the 2018-2019 Big Read.

The Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (PMAHCC) and Penn State Greater Allegheny are partnering to host a basketball charity game to raise funds to be used scholarships for college students. This event benefits the PMAHCC Foundation Educational Fund and PSUGA’s scholarship program.

Food will be provided at the event.

Featuring Darius Prince, Arena Bowl XXX MVP from the Philadelphia Souls and Philadelphia Eagles (2018 pre-season), Orlando Melendez, Harlem Globetrotters, Frank Connolly, Pittsburgh Pirates President, Joey Cora, Pittsburgh Pirates 3rd Base Coach,  Omar Moreno, ex Pittsburgh Pirate and 1979 World Series champion team, Robert Mangino of KDKA Radio and many more!

Pittsburgh’s Coro Latinoamericano—one of the nation’s only secular choirs performing in Spanish—is teaming up with the First Unitarian Universalist Choir & students at Duquesne University’s Mary Pappert School of Music for a special holiday concert—Paz y Armonía (Peace and Harmony), Sunday December 16 at 3:00pm.

Directed by award-winning cellist, Ábner Jairo García, from Morelia Mexico, the groups will present an evening of traditional Spanish & Latin American holiday and popular music, with special songs for Hanukkah and Kwanzaa too!

Date & Time: Sunday, Dec. 16th, at 3:00PM

Location: First Unitarian Church, 605 Morewood Ave., Pgh, PA 15213.

Admission is free although donations will be accepted. The concert is family friendly; the venue is handicap accessible.

In 2018 PMAHCC held more events than any past year. More than 2,000 unique individuals have registered for these events over the course of the year. For these events we teamed up with ALPHA, LACU, Facebook, The City of Pittsburgh, Acrobatique Creative, Brown Forman, La Palapa, The Rivers Casino, The Rivers Club, Casa Brasil, Innovation Works, The Hotel Monaco, Izzazu Salon, Verdettos and known Artist Jeremy Raymer, Zone 28, Reed Smith, The Pittsburgh Business Show, Mooka entertainment, UPMC, Inventionland, Coca-Cola, The Latino Community Center, El Jimador Tequilla, DJ SMI and more.

We have established a relationship with Acrobatique Creative and Brown Forman to produce an annual event, Dia De Los Muertos and Cinco de Mayo. If you were not at our Dia De Los Muertos event, put it on your calendar for next year. This year 366 people came to the hotel Monaco in Dia De Los Muertos makeup and partied the night away to celebrate diversity and unity and next year it will be even BIGGER!

Chairman of the board- Carmen Malloy, Chamber president- Ivan Usero and Director of Development- Melanie Marie Boyer attended our United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce National Convention where we discovered many tools to drive the chamber forward and made invaluable connections that, we hope, will benefit all of our members.

Over the course of the last eight months, our Social Media and website have increased traffic dramatically. Website traffic has increased more than 1,000% on average. Our Facebook page went from an average of 15 engagements per month to more than 14,000 engagements over the last 8 months. The number of people following the Chamber page has increased 700%. If you follow and like our page - which you should- you can keep up with everything going on in the Hispanic community, not only chamber items.

These are only a few highlights of the things PMAHCC has done this year. We believe that by increasing visibility, awareness and engagement that we can better give back to our members and the community as a whole. It is with your support that we may ensure the future viability of the chamber. In 2019 we are going to continue to build on the foundation that has been established at our organization and keep moving forward with your help.

Did you know that the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce was awarded the 2018 Chamber of the Year by Latino Connection Magazine?!

By 2020, 20% of the population will be Hispanic and by 2060, Hispanics are projected to represent 31% of the total U.S. population; only 12% less than the projected number of Caucasians! Hispanics have $1.7 trillion in buying power in the United States, a 55% increase from 2010 and are opening businesses at a rate of 8 to 1 when compared to Caucasians.

Marketing to U.S. Hispanics is on the radar of every Fortune 500 CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) and it should be on yours too!

"Surveyed a select panel of senior-level marketers to see if the U.S. Hispanic audience was on their roadmaps. They clearly recognized the opportunity: Most saw 11—25% of their company's growth coming from this demographic in the next three to five years. Still, most brands didn't have a marketing strategy for this audience, and most agencies were advising clients to invest in reaching them either "somewhat" or "not at all." -Google

At a time when it was needed most, Friday night's Dia de Los Muertos event was a wonderful celebration that brought all ages, races, socioeconomic classes, sexes (and more) together to celebrate diversity, unity and life!

This event did not only celebrate a traditional Mexican holiday, but started a new tradition FOR ALL here in Pittsburgh. We can not wait until next year!

Through this communication, the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (“PMAHCC”), its constituent Board of Directors, and its membership at large, express the most sincere condolences and deepest sympathies to all those directly and indirectly affected by the recent acts of senseless, horrific violence perpetrated against the Tree of Life Synagogue.

Violence, in any of its harmful forms, has no place in our community, especially when directed against innocent human beings targeted because of their race, gender, religious beliefs, or any other personal identifier. Our organization, one of Pittsburgh’s largest and most diverse community engagement non-profits, will continue to cherish diversity and inclusion in our community, and our activities will always promote principles of respect and solidarity applicable to all.

The PMAHCC stands in solidarity with the Jewish community, the Tree of Life Synagogue, and our city as a whole. Additionally, we are grateful for the admirable courage demonstrated by the local law enforcement authorities and first responders that sacrificed their wellbeing amidst the gravest of dangers. We will continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Pittsburgh was built, brick by brick, by a cohesive community of hard-working, honest immigrants, and it has evolved into one of the country’s most dynamic and resilient sectors. Acts of bigotry, hatred, and racism will not define or destroy us - they never have, they never will. As such, Pittsburghers will overcome this tragedy, and, through our collective resilience, we will prove that isolated acts of hatred cannot undo the bonds that have unified the Steel City together for centuries.
