According to The Brookings Institute, Pittsburgh is making it's rise as a Global Innovation City effectively capturing the next economy.

"Today, the competitive advantage of the region is no longer its rivers and raw materials but its high-skilled workers, world-class research institutions, and technology-intense advanced manufacturing. In 2016, for example, the region’s per capita university research and development (R&D) spending was nearly two and a half times the national average. While these assets are considerable, they also place Pittsburgh in competition with a number of other innovation cities that are rapidly investing billions in a suite of new technologies and industries poised to reshape the global economy." PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected Carmen Malloy, Consultant and Customer Relations Specialist with Peoples Gas, as the recipient of the NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award Presented by Nationwide.

The NFL, Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) and Nationwide have partnered for the seventh annual NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Awards during the 2017 celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The awards recognize the contributions of Hispanic leaders in each NFL market.

The Steelers honored Malloy at their game on Sunday, Oct. 8 when they face the Jacksonville Jaguars at 1 p.m.

Malloy, a Colombian born naturalized United States citizen, has worked at Peoples Gas for the last 25 years. She is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work master’s program and is committed to the Peoples mission of making life better in our community. In her capacity at Peoples, Malloy advocates for those who are less fortunate.  Malloy joined the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (PMAHCC) in 1999 and in 2013 she was elected President of the executive board.  Malloy supports the PMAHCC mission of contributing to making Pittsburgh the city of opportunity and growth for our future generations by managing the Chamber’s Foundation Scholarship program.  This program has provided 97 students with scholarships totaling $142,000 since the initiative began in 2011. Malloy enjoys volunteering and was the 2016 recipient of the Minority Action Group Minority Achiever’s Award.  She donates her time to multiple organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh and the YMCA Greater Pittsburgh Community Advisory Committee.

Each award recipient will select an organization of their choice that serves the local Hispanic community to receive a $2,000 donation.

Malloy has chosen the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as the recipient of the $2,000 donation which will provide scholarships to two students through the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation Scholarship program.

Nationwide’s partnership with the NFL and support of the Hispanic Heritage Leadership Awards is the latest in a series of rich and authentic relationships with the Hispanic community. The Columbus-based insurance and financial services company already has partnerships with Latina Style, the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Association of Latino Professionals For America, and Prospanica. Nationwide also provides resources, support, and service to Hispanic consumers and business owners across the country. The sponsorship of Hispanic Heritage Leadership Awards aligns with Nationwide’s goal of partnering with organizations that share the company’s values of improving the lives of others and giving back to the community.

“Nationwide is excited to be partnering with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation and the National Football League to present this year’s Hispanic Heritage Leadership Awards,” said Mike Boyd, Senior Vice-President of Marketing at Nationwide. “Nationwide takes pride in working with groups who share our values of improving the lives of others and giving back to the community. We look forward to recognizing the charitable efforts of Hispanic leaders in all 32 NFL markets during Hispanic Heritage Month.”

    About the Hispanic Heritage Foundation

The Hispanic Heritage Foundation – a nonprofit established by the White House in 1987 – inspires, prepares, and connects minority leaders in the classroom, community, and workforce to meet America’s priorities.  HHF also promotes cultural pride, accomplishment, and the great promise of the community through public awareness campaigns seen by millions.  HHF is headquartered in Washington, DC, and Los Angeles with satellite workspaces in New York, Silicon Valley, San Antonio, and Miami (Visit www.HispanicHeritage.org).

How do you define "community leadership"?

What would you tell someone who was considering going to medical school?

What is your favorite part Pittsburgh?

Jose Miguel Juarez is a first-generation Guatemalan American born and raised in a single parent home in Paterson NJ, where he graduated as valedictorian of DePaul Catholic High School. He completed his bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics at the College of the Holy Cross where he graduated with honors and conducted Atomic and Laser Physics Research for which he was offered a research position at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena CA.

Mr. Juarez’s greatest passion is living, learning, and working directly among underserved populations and advocating fervently for their rights. Hence, after college he joined Teach For America and served as a high school teacher in a low-income Latino community in Houston TX and in a low-income African American community in Tunica MS. After TFA, he moved to Spring Hill FL and worked in a medically-underserved community as a coordinator of medical services for Crescent Community Free Clinic. Today, here in Pittsburgh, he volunteers as a paramedic for Operation Safety Net, a team bringing medical services directly to the homeless in the streets and under the bridges of Pittsburgh. He is also a coordinator and medical translator for SALUD – Clinica Gratuita, a free clinic committed to helping our Spanish-speaking community. Currently, Mr. Juarez is a third year medical student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine where he founded the UPittMed chapter of the national Latino Medical Student Association. His area of concentration is Global Health and Underserved Populations, and his area of research is pediatric otolaryngology at UPMC’s Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Juarez’s passion and commitment to both academics and community service has been recognized nationally by the American Medical Association Foundation and Alpha Sigma Nu, the National Jesuit Honor Society. In 2015, he was named a National Minority Scholar. He was also a recipient of the National Magis Medal. He has also been recognized at the city level by the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Gateway Medical Society, and Café con Leche. He is one of the recipients of this year’s PMAHCC Scholarship as well as the GMS Academic Achievement and Community Service Award. He is also one of the 2015 FUERZA! Latino Making a Difference in Pittsburgh Award winners. At the school level, he received the 2016 Blue Star Community Service Award from the University of Pittsburgh and the 2016 Sally Miller Award for Advocacy on Behalf of the Medically Underserved by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Motivated by these experiences, Mr. Juarez is determined to continue learning, serving, and helping to reduce health disparities here in Pittsburgh, and throughout our country. As a doctor, he will continue volunteering and advocating passionately for all who do not have access to health care.

I have been involved with the PMAHCC since its inception in 2004. UPMC joined the PMAHCC in 2006. The Chamber is a great partner. The PMAHCC Board is comprised of excellent professionals and leaders. The board chair, Ron Alvarado, is very professional and passionate and works hard to ensure the success of this great organization. The Board is clear on the its mission, vision, and future direction.

UPMC is a sponsoring partner. We provide financial support to assist the Chamber with the work they perform to grow the Hispanic business community and the Pittsburgh region. UPMC hosted the 2016 Annual Membership Meeting and was the Presenting Sponsor of the 2015 Annual Hispanic Gala, Three King Celebration and the Hispanic Heritage Month Gala (where all proceeds benefit the PHAHCC Foundation). In addition, we have attended the Three Rivers Sala Cruise and the Roberto Clemente Scholarship Fundraiser.

The Chamber has provided UPMC qualified suppliers who have provided excellent products and services to include market intelligence, orthotics, staffing, medical supplies, project management, event planning, and

construction, etc. UPMC recognizes that these suppliers enhance its supply chain and increase its competitive advantage in the marketplace.

UPMC and the PMAHCC are truly committed to improve the economic development of this region and I believe by continuing to work together we will be successful.

Dr. Julio ClavijoAlvarez opened ReNova Plastic Surgery 16 months ago in Wexford, Pennsylvania. He opened his business based on his personal values of quality customer service and care.
